Alright, guys, this will be a quick hitter, but an impactful one.

The Dark Queen of Mortholme is a must-play for the majority of gamers, and let me tell you why. It asks one simple question: “What is it like to be a video game final boss?” What you might think is a cut-and-dry answer transforms into an emotional experience that takes the age-old pursuit of life’s purpose and applies it to the journey of a lone hero trying to overcome their final challenge.

2D pixel art, simple controls, and a great soundscape all combine to create an indie gem that truly made me realize games can be more than just games. They’re a medium for making you think. If you have something to say, why not say it in a video game? Mortholme will teach you to look at things a little differently.

We’re all gamers, so we ultimately know how these situations usually play out. What matters is that you have a choice in how things unfold. Will you be honorable and accept the outcome? Will you fight at all costs? Or will you try to alter your fate and look at things from a different perspective?

With multiple endings to explore and an easily digestible runtime of around two hours to experience them all, I hope you get as much out of this game as I did. And who knows? Maybe you’ll take a new perspective the next time you step into a final boss’s sanctum.
