Frequently asked questions

How the site works, from your first sign-in to your game lists and privacy.

Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. Episodes, news, trailers, Hottest, Games, and the Leaderboard are open to everyone. An account lets you keep game lists, rate games, hype upcoming games, and show up in the Community.

How do I make an account?

Press Sign in at the top of any page and pick Discord or Patreon. There is no password to make. The first time, you pick a username and you are in.

What can my username be?

3 to 20 letters, numbers, or underscores, and family-friendly. You can change it later on your account page; your old profile link keeps working for a while.

Can I sign in with both Discord and Patreon?

Yes. Sign in with one, then link the other under Linked accounts on your account page. Linking Discord shows your VGP server role and counts towards your trophies; linking Patreon shows your supporter tier. Sign in and link in the same browser: apps like Discord open links in their own browser, which keeps a separate sign-in, and can leave you with two accounts. If linking Patreon or Steam finds them on an empty second account, we fold that one into yours. If you still end up with two, ask a host on Discord to merge them.

How old do I need to be?

Members must be 13 or older. You confirm it when you set up your profile (Discord and Patreon ask for 13 or older too).

How do I delete my account?

At the bottom of your account page: tick the box and press Delete. It removes your profile, lists, ratings, trophies, and linked accounts. Comments you left on the host play blog stay so the conversations still read, but show as "Deleted member"; delete any you want gone first from My comments.

I just joined. Where do I start?

A few steps make the site yours:

  • Choose who sees your profile (the question at the top of your account page).
  • Add a few games on My games, or import them from Steam.
  • Mark the consoles you play on, and follow a few genres on your account page.
  • Put games you want to play with others on your Let's play list.
  • Link Discord (if you signed in with Patreon) for your role, the Community page, and the bot.

Your pages show a Get set up card that ticks these off as you go. In the VGP Discord, type /vgphelp to see what the bot can do.

How do I contact the show?

Email info@videogamerspod.com. The hosts read every message. For a quick chat, the VGP Discord is the fastest way to reach the community.

Using the site

Where do I find an episode?

Open Episodes. Each episode page has the video, links to every podcast app, and the games it talks about.

What is the Hottest page?

The hosts' list of the games they are most excited about for the month. Before the list is out, it shows the games coming out that month. Use the month buttons to look back or ahead.

What happens when I press a game?

A game card opens with its release date, platforms, trailer, where to buy it, and buttons to put it on your lists. It also shows everything VGP has on the game: the episodes that talked about it, reviews, trailers, news, its spot on the hosts' Leaderboard (with a link to the deep dive), and the hosts' play blog posts.

What is the Community page?

Member profiles you can browse by game, by who is playing what, and by newest, and members' own top 10 lists on the Community lists tab. You need to be in the VGP Discord to see it, and your own profile shows there only if you turn on Community listing.

How do I find someone to play with?

Put games on your Let's play list, then open a game on the Community page to see who else plays it. In Discord, /vgpwhoplays shows who has a game and /letsplay calls them to play.

What are trophies?

Trophies are for what you do on the site and in the VGP Discord: rating games, finishing them, hyping games before they come out, how long you have been with us, and more. Most have tiers that look grander as you go, from Bronze up to Opal, and they never go down. Hosts and mods give a few by hand, like Bug hunter. Hover over or tap a trophy to see what it took and what the next tier needs. The Trophies section on your profile also lists the ones you have not earned yet.

How do I choose the trophies on my card?

On your profile, press Edit favorite trophies in the Trophies section. Drag up to 6 into On your card and put them in order, then press Save. If you pick none, your Community card shows your 6 grandest.

What are Community lists?

Members' own top 10 lists on any topic, like "Top 10 spooky Halloween games". Find them on the Community lists tab of the Community page: open a list to see its games, or press Share for a card made for a screenshot, with a link to copy. Filter by a word in the title, a game, a tag, or who made it. Like the rest of the Community, they are for members of the VGP Discord.

How do I make a Community list?

Making lists is a perk for Epic members and up. On Community lists, press New list, drag 3 to 10 games in from your library (or search every game), put them in order, then give it a title and up to 5 tags (or Custom). Choose who sees it: the Community, or only you while you work on it. Press the star next to one of your lists to show it on your profile.

How do I search the site?

Press the magnifier at the top of any page and type a game, an episode, a review, or a member. A few games show as you type; press Enter for everything: games, episodes, reviews, the hosts' play blog (Epic members and up), trailers, news, Community lists, and members you can see on the Community page. Press a game to open its card with everything VGP has on it.

Can I compare Community lists?

Yes. On Community lists, tick Compare on 2 to 4 lists, then press Compare to see them side by side. Games on more than one list are marked with how many lists they are on. The page has its own link, so you can share it.

Your library

What are the four lists?
  • Hyped: you want it and it is not out yet.
  • Wishlist: you want it and it is out.
  • Backlog: you have it but have not played it.
  • Played: you have played it.

A Hyped game moves to your Wishlist on its own the day it comes out.

How do I add a game?

Search on My games and press a list button, open any game card on the site and use its list buttons, or use /vgpadd (or the + buttons on /vgpgame) in the VGP Discord.

How do I move, rate, or remove games?

On My games the table saves as you click: pick a list, a rating, or consoles, or press the X to remove a game. Tick several games to move or change them all at once.

How do I mark a game Finished?

On a Played game, press the trophy next to its rating. A gold trophy then shows on your library and profile. Filter by Finished to see the games you finished.

How do I put my games in my own order?

Pick My order in Sort with no filters on, then use the arrows in the Order column. In Cards view, drag a game by its handle.

Can I import my Steam library?

Yes. Link Steam on Steam import, load your library, tick the games you want, and press Import. Games you own go to Backlog, games not out yet go to Hyped.

What are Let's play and Featured playing?

Let's play (up to 25 games) is for games you want to play with others; the Discord bot can ping you when someone wants to play one. Featured playing (up to 3) shows what you are playing right now on your profile and Community card.

How many games can a list hold?

Up to 10,000 games a list.

Discord bot

What can the bot do?

Type /vgphelp in the VGP Discord for the full list. The main ones:

  • /vgpprofile: a member's profile, with Profile, Let's play, and Top 10 pages
  • /vgpgame: a game's release, rating, hype, who has it, and buttons to add it to your lists
  • /vgpwhoplays: members who have a game, Let's play first
  • /vgpadd: put a game on one of your lists
  • /vgplist: share a Community list in the chat
  • /vgprandom: a random pick from your Backlog, Played, or both, skipping finished games if you like
  • /vgpreleases: games coming out this week, next week, or this month
  • /vgpvote: vote in the members' vote (paid members)
  • /vgphottest, /vgphyped, /vgpleaderboard: this month's Hottest, the most hyped games, the community's top games
  • /vgptrailer and /vgpepisode: a game's trailer, the newest episodes
  • /letsplay: call members who play a game to play together
How do Let's play pings work?

Let's play is a perk for Rare members and up. When someone runs /letsplay for a game on your Let's play list, the bot pings you. Turn pings on or off with /letsplaynotification, or set quiet hours on your account page.

Why does the bot not know me?

Sign in to the site with Discord (or link Discord on your account page). The bot only knows members who have linked Discord.

Perks and paid members

Who are paid members?

Patreon supporters, and members with a paid supporter role in the VGP Discord. Perks go by tier: Rare, Epic, and Legendary (Heroic and Mythic count as Legendary). Link Patreon or Discord on your account page so the site knows.

What do paid members get?

Perks go by tier, and each tier gets everything below it. Rare: members' votes (also in Discord with /vgpvote), bonus episodes, your ratings and top 10 counting on the Leaderboard, and Let's play. Epic adds the hosts' play blog (read the posts and talk about them in the comments), writing community reviews, making Community lists, Hottest suggestions, and voting in Hijack a Host. Legendary (and Heroic and Mythic) adds nominating a game for a host to play in Hijack a Host. See every tier on Support the show.

How do comments on the host play blog work?

Every paid member can comment on the host play blog posts, reply to each other (with a quote of what you are answering), and put 🔥 on posts and comments. To comment, your profile needs to be listed in the Community (on your account page), so everyone knows who is talking. You can edit a comment for an hour after posting it and delete it any time; My comments lists them all. Wrap spoilers in ||two bars||, name someone with @theirname, and paste a GIF link from GIPHY, Klipy, Tenor, or Imgur (or a picture from Reddit, X, or a Steam screenshot) to show it. New comments show up on their own while the post is open, and the blog list shows what is new since your last visit.

What are the rules for comments?

Keep it PG-13 and follow the community rules: no big swears, nothing sexual, no slurs, and be kind. Comments with words we keep off the site are stopped before they post. If something slips through, press Report: three reports hide a comment until a host or moderator looks. Hosts and moderators can hide comments, close a post's comments, and pause someone's commenting.

Why does a comment say "Hidden by user"?

Its author has since taken their profile out of the Community listing, so their comments are hidden too. They come back if the member lists their profile again.

Privacy and your data

Who can see my profile?

Only you, at first. Turn on Community listing to show it to signed-in members of the VGP Discord. Your profile link stays private (others get "page not found") unless you make the link public to share it.

What does the site keep about me?

Your Discord or Patreon account number, your username, and what you add yourself: lists, ratings, followed genres. Also your Discord roles in the VGP server (for your role and trophies) and, if you link Steam, your Steam ID and name. We never sell your data. The privacy page has the full list.

Do you keep my email?

No. Discord sends it when you sign in and we delete it right away. We never ask Patreon for your email or real name.

Is my Discord name or picture shown?

Only if you turn them on under Discord on your profile on your account page. The hosts and moderators look over new Discord pictures, and can switch one that breaks the Community rules back to a pixel icon until you change it.

Does the site see what I am playing on Discord?

Only if you turn on Playing now (it starts off). Then your current game shows on your profile while you play, and nothing is kept once you stop.

Is my hype public?

Your hype adds to a game's hype count, but never by name. Your lists show only where your profile does.

What does Steam share?

Your owned games and wishlist are read only when you press load, and only the games you import are kept. We never see your Steam password. Unlink Steam at any time.

Do you sell my data?

No. We never sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising: the site has no ads. Only the services that run the site (Cloudflare and Supabase) and the ones you sign in or link with (Discord, Patreon, Steam) handle it, and only to do that job. See the privacy page.

Site terms

What is hype?

How many members have a game on their Hyped list. Game cards show it once a few members hype a game, and the glow gets brighter as it grows: Common, Uncommon (green), Rare (blue), Epic (purple), Legendary (yellow).

What is a Community pick?

A game on the Hottest list that members asked for.

What is the community rating?

The average of members' ratings (1 to 10) for a game, once at least 3 members have rated it.

What is the Leaderboard?

The community's top games from paid members' top 10s, plus the hosts' own boards and top 10s. On the community board, a remaster, port, or Game of the Year edition adds to the original, and the board shows the original. Remakes are often very different games, so they are ranked on their own.

What do Hyped, Wishlist, Backlog, and Played mean?

See What are the four lists? under Your library.
