The best game nobody seems to have played.

Plot You play as Wander, a young man who journeys across a desolate, forbidden land to resurrect a fallen maiden named Mono. The game starts out with Wander striking a deal with a mysterious entity who promises to resurrect the maiden in exchange for Wander slaying the sixteen colossi scattered across the realm. Armed with only a sword, a bow, and your trusty horse, Agro, you set off on your journey.
Exploration/navigation Without traditional map markers, your path to the next boss is guided by your magic sword, which points you in the general direction and then off you ride on Agro. The level design subverts typical action-adventure conventions. Instead of sprawling dungeons, intricate towns, or hordes of minor enemies, the world is a vast, quiet open wilderness filled with dusty plains, ruined temples, and misty forests. The environment serves purely as a quiet canvas that emphasizes Wander's isolation and the gravity of his quest. It behooves you to explore this land because hunting down fruits (HP) and white-tail-lizards (stamina) with your bow help level up your character.
The Bosses The world they’ve created is gorgeous, but the spectacle of the colossi is what undeniably draws players to Shadow of the Colossus. Each confrontation is less a traditional action beat and more a thrilling, gargantuan boss fight where the enemy is the level. What makes these encounters truly revolutionary is the game's unique climbing mechanic: by grabbing onto fur, scales, and stone ledges, you must manually hold your grip while scaling living mountains that thrash and attempt to throw you off. Balancing stamina management with real-time physics, you cling to a beast hundreds of feet in the air while searching for their weak spot to plunge your sword into. This creates an unmatched sense of tension and physical connection, transforming every climb into an exhilarating puzzle. Every encounter feels epic, mournful, and distinct.
Final Thoughts What initially feels like the game's shortcoming in a simple, or even total lack of story, gradually transforms into one of the game's greatest strengths. As you journey deeper into the Forbidden Lands, your emotions undergo a profound shift: the initial thrill and triumph of felling a giant slowly gives way to an unsettling sense of solemnity, melancholy, and moral ambiguity with every tragic, quiet death scene. It is something you must experience to understand.
With its unique gameplay, subtle but extremely effective storytelling, and epic but novel approach to boss battles, Shadow of the Colossus is a game I wish everyone would experience. It is a true work of art and "masterpiece" at that.
